Glaucoma Diagnosis & Co-management

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, leading to vision loss and even blindness if left untreated. Glaucoma often goes unnoticed because it happens gradually, and many people don’t realize they have this condition until the damage is severe. At Northeast Eye Care, our glaucoma specialists in West Point, Pender, and Oakland use state-of-the-art technology to accurately diagnose glaucoma in its early stages and develop personalized treatment plans for each patient.

During a comprehensive eye exam, our team will measure your eye pressure to see if you have glaucoma or are at risk of developing it. High eye pressure is a common sign of glaucoma. We’ll also perform visual field testing to assess your peripheral (or side) vision and detect any areas of vision loss that could be caused by glaucoma. Depending on the results, we may recommend additional tests such as optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging to get a clearer picture of your eye health.

Treatment for glaucoma

There is no cure for glaucoma, but early treatment can often stop the damage and prevent further vision loss. One common treatment is using medications or prescription eye drops to lower eye pressure. These treatment options work by either decreasing fluid production in the eye or increasing its drainage. Our team at Northeast Eye Care will work closely with you to determine the best course of treatment based on your unique needs.

Surgery co-management for glaucoma

If eye drops are ineffective, our eye doctor may recommend surgery to lower eye pressure and prevent further damage to the optic nerve. In this case, we will refer you to a trusted surgeon in the area and ensure they have a complete understanding of your medical history and vision needs. Our friendly staff will also schedule follow-up appointments after your surgery to make sure your recovery goes smoothly.
