Age-related Macular Degeneration

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a progressive eye disease that can cause blurry or distorted vision and even lead to permanent vision loss. AMD affects the macula, the part of your retina that controls central vision. At Northeast Eye Care, we can diagnose this condition in the early stages and provide treatment to help improve your vision and maintain your eye health.

Diagnosing AMD

At Northeast Eye Care, our experienced optometrists screen for AMD as a part of your comprehensive eye exam. We use innovative AdaptDX technology to detect early signs of AMD before any symptoms are noticeable. The test measures dark adaptation, which is one of the earliest signs of AMD development. By evaluating how quickly your eyes adjust to darkness, we can determine if you are at risk for AMD and create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your needs.

We also offer MPOD (macular pigment optical density) testing, which measures the density or thickness of your macular pigment. Research has shown that low levels of macular pigment are linked to an increased risk of developing AMD. By measuring your MPOD levels, our eye doctors can determine your risk for developing AMD and recommend treatment to preserve your vision.

Treatment for age-related macular degeneration

Treatment for AMD depends on the type and severity. Dry AMD is the most common form of the disease and tends to cause gradual vision loss. While there is currently no cure for dry AMD, taking certain dietary supplements can reduce the risk of developing late-stage AMD.

Wet AMD is less common but more severe than dry AMD. Unlike dry AMD, wet AMD involves abnormal blood vessel growth in the retina that can leak fluid or blood and cause rapid vision loss if left untreated. One common treatment is anti-VEGF injections, which help block the growth of abnormal blood vessels in the retina.
